Hello, my name is John Wilson. I am President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and I want to welcome you to the 2020 Congress.
This year’s Congress was scheduled to be a face-to-face meeting in Melbourne, but unfortunately, we have had to postpone that due to COVID-19.
We did not want to cancel Congress all together. We did not want to cancel because, now more than ever physicians are needed by the community and government. We now, more than ever, need to share research findings and policy ideas. Now more than ever, physicians need to protect the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve. Now more than ever physicians need to lead.
We need to be the scientific pathfinders for governments and healthcare systems, and our community. We need to sort out the wheat from the chaff as far as the facts of coronavirus are concerned. We need to treat each other with respect and consideration during these tumultuous times.
The College will keep updating this virtual congress throughout 2020 uploading presentations that help our members stay engaged and be informed. It will not be the same as a real-world Congress, but we hope this virtual congress will be a catalyst for informed debate, new policies and better outcomes.
In the meantime, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you face-to-face at Congress 2021 in Brisbane.
Professor John Wilson AM
